One example would be the Mount Dora Community Building built in 1929. Despite economic hardship in the late 1920s, Mount Dora residents showed their loyalty by raising funds for its upkeep. Then again in 2009, citizens came together, this time restoring and renovating their Community Building expanding its lobby and seating, keeping its unique style.
John Phillip Donnelly came to Florida in 1879 as a young Pittsburgh bachelor. As Donnelly approached Mount Dora with eager anticipation, word has it his eyes encountered a view of Lake Dora, “a wonderful, glorious vision that swept him off his feet.” John Philip Donnelly and his wife Annie built a home in downtown Mount Dora where they remained their entire lives.

Mount Dora is comprised of 9.2 square miles of which 8.0 square miles are land and 1.2 square miles is water. Mount Dora overlooks Lake Dora, Lake Gertrude, and Lake Beauclair, and because Mount Dora is situated on a plateau rising to 184 feet above sea level, it is slightly more than 100 feet above the level of the lakes.
